(Mr. Speaker, Mr. Kiss, Delegates Givens, Martin, Douglas,
Manuel, Mezzatesta, Michael, Pino, Staton, Varner, Trump,
Faircloth, Miller, Riggs and all the other members of the House
of Delegates)
Expressing the State of West Virginia's support for completion of
the National World War II Memorial to be located on the
National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Whereas, West Virginia has sent more than four hundred thirty
thousand of her sons and daughters to armed conflicts, the highest
number of veterans per capita than any other State in the country;
and
Whereas, Two hundred thirty-three thousand nine hundred eighty-
five of those veterans distinguished themselves by their unselfish
dedication to the principals of freedom and the American way of
life during their service in World War II; and
Whereas, A National World War II Memorial, to be built on the
National Mall in Washington, D.C., the first national memorial
dedicated to those Americans and West Virginians who served during
World War II, will pay tribute to the miracle of wartime production
performed by those who served on the home front and the many
sacrifices of the civilian population, and will represent West Virginia's own spirit, sacrifice and commitment to the common
defense of the nation and to the broader causes of peace and
freedom; and
Whereas, This memorial, will permanently honor those patriotic
West Virginians who served and sacrificed for their country during
the greatest war in history; and
Whereas, A national fund-raising initiative, administered by
the American Battle Monuments Commission, requesting states to
contribute to the World War II Memorial Fund, is currently underway
to honor those individuals; and
Whereas, West Virginia, through its fiscal year 2000 General
Revenue Budget, will allocate fifty thousand dollars to honor all
who served during World War II, as its contribution to the World
War II Memorial Campaign; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the State of West Virginia supports the completion of the
National World War II Memorial to be located on the National Mall
in Washington, D.C.; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the Director of
